“Dream Big, Stay Humble” – The Leadership Paradox

“It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.”Mahatma Gandhi

This quote perfectly captures one of the greatest tensions in leadership – how do we pursue extraordinary vision while keeping our feet firmly planted on the ground?

Breaking Down the Paradox

When we talk about dreaming big but remaining humble, we’re really talking about holding two truths simultaneously. Big dreams require unwavering faith and bold action, but humility keeps us teachable and dependent on God’s guidance.

The problem many leaders face is thinking these two qualities are opposites. They believe that to dream big, you must be confident to the point of arrogance. Or conversely, that humility means playing small and avoiding ambitious goals.

A Perfect Example

Look at David in the Bible. Here’s a shepherd boy who believed God could help him defeat Goliath – talk about dreaming big! But notice his approach in 1 Samuel 17:37: “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”

David’s confidence wasn’t in himself – it was in God. He dreamed impossibly big while remaining completely humble about the source of his strength.

The Transformation

When we learn to dream with humility, everything changes. Our vision expands because we’re not limited by our own abilities. We become more resilient because failure doesn’t crush our ego – it refines our dependence on God. As Proverbs 27:2 reminds us: “Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.”

So with all that said, how do we practically live this out?

Your Action Step This Week

Choose one big dream you’ve been hesitant to pursue. Write it down, then underneath, list three ways you need God’s help to achieve it. This simple exercise connects your vision to your need for divine guidance.

Philippians 2:3 gives us the perfect blueprint: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” Dream big for the right reasons – to serve others and glorify God.

Small Step: Share your dream with one trusted friend this week and ask them to pray with you about it.

What’s one big dream you’ve been afraid to pursue because you thought it made you prideful? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Always, Adam
